Our Mission Statement

Our club aims to educate and promote cybersecurity and technology through competitions and off-season activities. The club is a student-run organization with guidance from advisers and mentors. ​

Today, and in the future, cybersecurity skills are a growing demand as attacks on governments, citizens, and businesses move to the Internet.

Our club aims to: 

• Engage students in learning about careers in cybersecurity 
• Help students understand the importance of cybersecurity
• Equip students to better protect themselves and others on the Internet​​
• Give students a safe, engaging, and fun place to show off their cybersecurity skills

What Do We Do?

• Cyber Patriot. This is our mandatory competition which takes place in the fall. This event is the foundation of our club. Teams compete for the top placement within their state and region, and the top teams in the nation earn all-expenses-paid trips to Baltimore, MD for the National Finals Competition where they can earn national recognition and scholarship money.​​

• National Cyber League. This optional competition is more independent and allows members to compete on their own and on a team. They offer fall and spring seasons, but most of our students participate in the spring. More information about NCL can be found here.

• Local Competitions and Events. This includes the California Mayor's Cyber Cup (CMCC), the California Cyber Innovation Challenge (CCIC), Girls GoCyberStart, and dozens more. Our club is award winning in almost all of these local competitions.

• We also have off-season events ranging from fundraisers at restaurants to group field trips of cyber security companies.

Our Team

Cyber Patriot Club at Mira Costa was founded in 2015 with the help of students Ved Pandey and Dave Jha, and advisors Ms. Weaver, Ms. Dale, and Ms. Padveen.

We are proud to announce that we are no longer a "traditional" club under the Associate Student Body, but under the MBX Foundation as an organization with special amenities, such as a booster board and separate funding mechanisms.

Cyber Patriot

How the Competition Works

Mira Costa Success and Legacy

• The Cyber Patriot Competition is held over 4 weekends, where a team has 6 consecutive hours on one day of the weekend to work on an image, or a virtual computer.
• The virtual computer (which comes as a file) has multiple flaws and deficiencies to the system, and the team must try to secure as many flaws to the system as they can in the 6 hour period.
• For each flaw secured, points are added depending on the level of difficulty. At the end of the six hour period, points are totaled up and the team is ranked based on those of the rest of the United States.
• The virtual computers given are typically a Windows 7 system, a Windows 8 system, and a Ubuntu (Linux) system. In addition, teams are asked to complete a Cisco Networking Quiz in which they can demonstrate their knowledge of networking principles and protocols.
• Each coach can have up to 5 teams, with 2-6 members per each team.
• Based on the team's score in the first two rounds, the team is put into a "tier", which enables them to compete to varying degrees. 

In the 2015 year, Mira Costa had two teams each with 4-5 members each, competed in the Open Service Division, and ranked in the top half of the Gold Tier.

In the 2016 year, Mira Costa had eight teams with 5-6 members each, competed in the Open Service Division, and had 1 team in the Platinum Tier, 2 teams in the Gold Tier, and 4 teams in the Silver Tier. 1 Silver Team competed at the final Regionals round.

Moving to 2017, Mira Costa continued to grow its success. We competed with 11 teams in which 7 competed in the Gold Tier, and 1 Silver Team again competed at the Regionals round.
